This one started in the year 2010, in the city of Philadelphia.

With the start of a new screen-printing shop in the works, an old computer retires and new one takes its place. My first laptop.

After a weeklong process of setting up the new computer, upgrading and organizing my filing systems, condensing all my personal documents, creative files, and professional files from across all my out-of-date and malfunctioning computers and hard drives, a project came in.

 

The inaugural project on the new laptop was a rushed projection project for a friend’s band. We had two days to put something together for the big show on Saturday night.

Although I wasn’t happy with the results of the project, my friend whose band was playing insisted we move forward.

After the show, it was such a beautiful September night that I decided to walk from Chinatown back home to West Philly.

At the end of the nearly four-mile walk, I crossed paths with a couple of guys who wanted my messenger bag as much as I did.

After a two-on-one boxing match that went on for two blocks, they were able to pull the bag until the strap broke, leading to a sprinting pursuit of my stolen cargo and the heavy handed, swift footed, sneak up artists that took it from me.

The night didn’t go my way. The computer and external hard drive was lost, and I was left having to rebuild my creative and professional practice.

I needed subject matter. Something to focus on, something to explore

During this time of my life, I was working for a naturopathic doctor at his herb store in University City and doing freelance design work. One day at the herb store I crossed paths with someone reading a book on the I Ching, and after paging through the book I wanted to know more, and I picked up my own book from the used bookstore.

I began to explore the I Ching further by examining the structure of the symbols, the groupings, and the relationships between them. I was more interested in the dynamic structure of the system than the philosophical and divination aspects.

Incorporating this exploration into the designs of pattern and number, had my attention fully captured, and I had seemingly found more than just subject matter for design work.

Efforts to rebuild a body of design work fell by the wayside as I became more focused on learning and understanding than I was attempting to make a design piece.

I became absorbed, fascinated, and amazed. My mind was electrified, and I needed to see the structure of these systems.

I’ve created maps, animations, and sculptures to understand these structures.

Further exploration into the nature of growth, electricity, magnetism, resonance, and hydrodynamics as well as the possible structural and mechanical applications using untapped characteristics from these systems is on the horizon.

Here and now, it has come full circle
